Darrow lives as a low life Red in a society run by the Golds. He is mostly satisfied with his life, till he goes with his wife to a place which is forbidden. Later on while being punished for her crime, his wife sings a forbidden song and is executed by a Gold. Darrow boils with rage and seems to have a death wish, considering he buries his wife which is also forbidden. Following this act he is later sentenced to death and is hanged. He is dead in the eyes of his fellow Reds and his, till it is discovered that he was rescued by Ares (a rebel organization). Soon Darrow finds out that his kind has been wronged by none other than the rulers of society: the Golds. Burning with rage that will only suffice with justice Darrow finds his place among the Golds by turning into one, only to burn them to the ground.
